Arcgis project

A project that I’m working on at the moment is for a subject called “Introducción a los SIG” in this class we learn how to use a computer system knowing as Arcgis that superimpose layers with different types of spatial information, this help the geographers to map cities, influence areas or presenting a view of anything (literally).
The project is about mapping the concentration of a contaminant particle called mp 2,5 on bike roads that are present in Santiago. With this information we have to suggest new places where bike roads should be constructed, this new roads have to be in the place where there are less concentrations of this particle. We also have to find out why in certain hours of the day there are more concentration or less concentration, it can be because of the pollutions of the cars or radiation. My and my group have not figured out yet.
This is a semester-long project, it has been quite hard to follow a line with working every week, because we have to do it by ourselves in our indirect hours and since we have other stuff to do, we leave the project until last time. Also, for mapping any situation you need to find the layers which you are going to work with, and if it does not exist, you have to figured it out how to get that spatial information, it can be cutting or mixing two layers.
The spatial information is generally shared by public institutions as the MMA, BCN, INE, IDE, SINCA, and others.
Fortunately we have found everything we need, but we have not found the time to start working on Arcgis.

Borderlines

Today I will talk about borders between countries.
Borders are those imaginary lines that separates countries from one another, these lines helps to measure how big a country or a continent is, but at the same time keeps alive nationalism and xenophobia.
Even though it is true that the borderlines helps the government to maintain order and give limits to have in mind the whole population to do public policies, these separations between countries can also mean hard conflicts since in this world the biggest, the better.
In the system that we all are through, we are sadly influenced by what the politicians and the government do, so if the whole population sees that the person who we all voted for is saying bad things about another country, everybody will think that it is correct to treat them like that. This also helps to generate general prejudice about a whole country that maybe we just know the name so that is why I also think that travel as much as possible and get to know new cultures it is very important to create your own opinion about a whole country.
We all need to know and it is very important to keep in mind that there are not bad or evil countries but for sure there are bad and evil politicians that transfer their thought to the population because that helps them to have followers. A relevant thought as well it is that something different does not mean something bad.

thoughts about the 18

I think this could be a very long conversation, I have many thoughts about the national day but I will try to resume everything and maybe quit some others thoughts.
The thing that I love to do during this holiday is to visit my family in the countryside, I rarely see my family during the year because my mom is the only one of her sisters who lives in Santiago. I also think that is a good holiday to everyone because we all need a rest during the routine.
I don’t like this national holiday because a big part of the society forgets the real problems that Chile has and the politic class take advantage of this. I also dislike seeing how the people can’t manage their own trash, after the fondas the place is full of plastic on the grown and no one cares about how much damage it means all that plastic.
My plans for this holiday are going to the countryside for the whole week I will go to the mountains, bike to the river, see old friends and sadly study and read university stuff because if I do not do it now I will stress easily later on.

A job I would like to have

I really see myself working as a geographer, maybe it is a little bit early to say that since I am in the first year of university but at the moment I am in love with my career and I will enjoy this feeling until it keeps on me.
Actually I have not decided which part of the geography I like most, if the human or the science part. But I know that I would like to work in social problems, mapping urban projects, specialized myself in glaciology or climatology. I would also like to make and investigation about how the garbage contaminants stay in the atmosphere and how they move over the timeline.
I would like to have these kind of jobs because in anyone of them I help to another person in singular or plural and that give a meaning to what you are doing.
I really important skill that a geographer should have, in my opinion, is being multidisciplinary. If you work in science geography, you can’t forget the human part because you need those two visions of the world to look for the best solution.
I think the satisfaction that I am looking for is to feel comfortable with myself knowing that I am doing thing to change the world to a better one trying to teach humans how we are deeply involved with nature.

Eloísa Díaz

I will write about Eloísa Díaz, I think she was a very important person that influenced in the history of all Chilean and Latinoamerican women and thanks to many things she did we (women) have had reach a space in a patriarchal society.
She was born the 25th of June in 1866, and she was the very first medical woman student in Chile and Latinoamérica at this university. She graduated in December of 1880 with an interesting thesis about observations of puberty in girls.
Eloísa also was the first headmistress of the Servicio Médico Escolar de Chile. In this institution she tried to establish an obligatory student breakfast with her own money, she also promoted massive vaccines for students and she fought against alcoholism and many others medical problems.
This important woman is a real fighter because in those years where she lived it was very difficult to live as a woman and especially if you wanted to be a professional or do something else that just be at the service of men. Even though many times she was the only woman surrounded by men, she kept her eye on her goals.
I would definitely ask her what kind of comments she received in her professional times and in who did she rely on when the society was intolerable for her.

I did not really enjoy any subject when I was in the school but I had good grades in chemistry so I got to like it a little bit.
I had a really good teacher, she was very nice and she really knew how to keep calm while teaching my class.
As I said before, my grades were quite good so I felt happy to know that I was good for something that I could probably join in the future.
I learned a lot about how nature is as we see it and why it is the way it shows up to us. Understanding how the atom is composed and how becomes bigger is an interesting thing to know. However, the main thing that I got to know, was that it is not enough to be just good at something if you don’t feel anything while you are doing it.
It is important to be grateful about what have we learnt during our short lives and that we have had, and actually have education because nowadays our rights are seen as something that can be bought.
